By the death on Friday of Mr. George Woodward, of 71, Buckingham-road, Aylesbury, the County town has lost another old resident. He was 87 years of age, and passed away after 25 years' suffering, very patiently borne.
Mr. Woodward was an old Aylesburian, being a son of the late Mr. William Woodward, baker and confectioner, of Cambridge-street. He used to assist in the business and conducted a confectionery stall in the Market Square on market days. Upon the death of his father he assisted his mother in the business until he took the situation of baker at the County Mental Hospital at Stone, duri g the medical seperintendency of Dr. Humphrey. He remained in that service for 38 years, and then owing to influenza and chill, to which he traced his chronic rheumatism, he retired on pension 25 years ago.
His death recalls a diamond wedding two years ago of singular features. The 60th anniversary of their wedding day on Friday, Sept. 13th, was enhanced by the touching spectacle of seeing husband and wife fondly embrace and chat with each other after being apart for about nine years: the nature of their respective ailments rendering it impossible for Mr. and Mrs. Woodward to share the same room without disastrous lack of sleep for each.
Mrs. Woodward, who predeceased her husband in September last year, was a Miss Sarah Lacey, daughter of Mr. Jesse Lacey, of Great Kimble, and afterwards of Askett.
The funeral was at Stone on Tuesday.
