A man who lived in the lee of the Chilterns all his life died at his home last week. He was Mr. Ernest Thomas Rutland, of Lyndale, Meadle.
Born in Kimblewick 81 years ago, Mr. Rutland moved the two miles to Meadle after his marriage in 1906 at Greatr Kimble Parish Church.
Mr. Rutland worked as a labourer until he retired in 1952, having served as a stretcher bearer in France during the first world war.
A keen gardener, he spent much of his time working the half acre of land at his home, and won prizes at many fruit and vegetable shows.
Mr. Rutland celebrated his diamond wedding in June 1966, and is survived by a widow, six sons, three daughters, 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
