Mrs. D. Pitcher, once a committee member of the Old Ellesborough District Nursing Association, died at her home, Bushey Leys Farm, Ellesborough, on Friday. She was 86.
Born in Wingrave, Mrs. Pitcher came to Ellesborough when she was married in 1902. She became a member of the Women's Institute in Kimble, but it is as a militant figure trying to raise money to build a bungalow for the Ellesborough district nurse that she will be remembered. This took place long before the coming of National Health, when it was necessary to raise the money by subscription.
Ten years ago Mrs. Pitcher suffered a broken hip and since that time has had to use a stick. However, she remained active until she died and continued doing her share of work in the house.
Mrs. Pitcher was widowed 24 years ago.
She leaves a son, a daughter, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The funeral was held at Ellesborough Parish Church on Wednesday.
